SURF CITY, N.C. -- After years of anticipation, Topsail Island residents finally took their first ride across the brand new Surf City bridge Tuesday morning.

Residents filled the top of the bridge for the ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating what the bridge means for the area, new residential development, and growth.

Many attendees were also sad to see the original swing bridge go after it's been a fixture of Surf City for more than 50 years.

“It's been along time coming. I've dreaded it, but I think it's wonderful now that it's here. I'm going to miss the old bridge. My dad was one of the original bridge tenders,” said resident Sheila Slater.

NCDOT and contractor Balfour Beatty finished the $54 million project almost a year ahead of schedule.
