DURHAM, N.C. – Floyd Clayton “Pete” Shankle, Jr. passed away Friday at the age of 67.

  • Shankle was a teacher and coach for the Durham Public School System for 30 years
  • Shankle was inducted into the N.C. Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2015
  • Shankle received many awards throughout his career

Born in Durham, Shankle served his community for 30 years as a coach and teacher with the Durham Public School System.

In 2015, Shankle was inducted into the N.C. Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame. Shankle also received the NCHSAA “ Homer Thompson 8 Who Make a Difference Award” and NCAAHPERD Coach of the Year in 2001, NCHSAA “Leon Brogden Special Person Award” in 2002, NCHSAA “Outstanding Contribution and Recognition Award First 90 Years” in 2003, and Durham Sports Club  “Hugo Germino Outstanding Ambassador of Sports Award” in 2013.

In 2001, the Southern Baseball Stadium was named “Pete Shankle Stadium”.

Shankle is a graduate of Appalachian State University and a UNC sports fan.

The family will receive family and friends Monday, Dec. 2 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home and a service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3 at Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens.
