The coldest air in nearly a year is settling into the Bay Area. Lows could be at or below freezing tonight for areas north of Tampa, and not far from freezing east and south of Tampa.

What You Need To Know

  • The coldest air of the season is arriving

  • Clouds are clearing out

  • Freeze Warning is in effect for the Nature Coast

  • Frost is likely Monday morning away from the water

Be sure to have your winter attire nearby as temperatures remain well below average into Monday. Winds will be lighter Monday.

The overall pattern across the East Coast is a cold one. While it's not unheard of this time of year, it will bring well below average temperatures to the Sunshine State into Monday and brutal Arctic air for parts of the Northeast.

A trough over the eastern United States has been promoting very cold weather for the entire East Coast.. Much of the United States will experience subfreezing temperatures, including many cities along the northern Gulf Coast.

Subzero temperatures will impact parts of the Great Lakes region and New England early Monday. Parts of the Nature Coast will also see temperatures below the freezing mark first thing Monday. When it comes to local impacts around Tampa Bay, lows will be in the mid to upper 30s. With clear skies and light winds, frost is likely, even south of Tampa.

Those who recently experienced a frost with the last round of cold weather will likely see another frost on Monday, especially if you live in those typical "cold" spots.

Even though it's relatively cold by Florida standards, these temperatures are not near to the records. The record low for Tampa Monday is 27, Lakeland 27, and Sarasota-Bradenton is 29, all set back in 2003. The record low in Tampa for January remains at 21 degrees. It is safe to say that record is safe.

Colder than average weather will continue through next week despite a slight rebound in temperatures next Tuesday and Wednesday.

So don't put the warm clothes away yet!

Indications point to another surge of cold air later next week that could result in temperatures falling into the 30s and 40s, once again. We will continue to keep you updated.
