A long-serving judge for Monroe County died Sunday after a fight with cancer.

The Honorable Elma Bellini was a Supreme Court Justice for the 7th Judicial District.

Overall, she has served as a judge in Monroe County for 18 years.

She was most recently elected to the State Supreme Court in 2009 and was set to serve up until 2022.

She received her education from Syracuse University College of Law in 1986.

Bellini was part of a number of organizations including Big Brothers Big Sisters, Camp Good Days and Special Times, the Greater Rochester Association of Women Attorneys.

There are no details yet on a memorial service or a funeral arrangements.

In a statement, Administrative Supreme Court Justice for the 7th Judicial District Craig Doran said, in part:

"We have lost a warm and wonderful friend; and our community has lost a fierce, extraordinarily competent and compassionate defender of justice. Please pray for her family as they seek peace in the face of this unspeakable loss.”

Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley issued a statement as well, saying in part:

"Justice Bellini treated each case that came before her with professionalism, respect and diligence. Every person in the legal community not only respected her as a judge but as a wonderful person.”
