DURHAM, N.C. — A grieving widow is now bedridden since her husband's murder over the weekend.

“Now he's gone. He can't come back anymore,” said Shirley Chan.

Officers found Hong Zheng, 42, shot to death in front of his driveway on Carlton Crossing Drive late Sunday night. The gunmen escaped and are still on the run.

Chan says the group of men ambushed her and Zheng as they pulled into their driveway. She got out, grabbed her gun, but the men fired, hitting Zheng as he sat in the car.

“Shooting, shooting, shooting..because my husband was parking the car, I didn't even think my husband got hurt,” she said.

Chan believes her family was targeted after burglars broke into their home at least four times over the past few years. She believes it has to do with the fact the couple runs and owns the nearby China Wok restaurant.

“Those people are thinking we got cash. We got money.”

The restaurant is now closed, and Chan doesn't know if it will reopen.

“I can't imagine how can I open without my husband. My family. My family really broke,” Chan said.

Zheng also leaves behind two teenagers. Chan says she doesn't know how she will send them to college. Relatives plan to bury Zheng in New York City.
