A Batavia man is facing several charges after he was accused of exploiting people who were trying to prepare for the death of their loved ones.

The Genesee County Sheriff's Office says Michael Tomaszewski, 48, is facing multiple charges, including several counts of grand larceny, scheme to defraud, and failure to deposit monies.

The sheriff's office says the suspect runs Tomaszewski Funeral and Cremation Chapel in Batavia.

The sheriff says the suspect took money from customers, who believed they were pre-paying for their specific funeral expenses.

Then, he allegedly did not put the money into accounts and trusts as he's legally obligated to do.

The sheriff says the payments ranged from $350 to $15,000, for a total of $525,000 in combined losses for victims.

He is set to appear in Batavia Town Court on September 17.
