DURHAM, N.C. – Samuel Oliver-Bruno, an an immigrant man who came to the United States illegally in 2014 and was claiming sanctuary in the church for almost a year, was detained while attending a scheduled meeting with immigration officials on Friday. His petition for deferred deportation has been denied.

He was awaiting instructions while being detained in Georgia but will now be deported back to Mexico.

Members of CityWell Church in Durham spoke out after Oliver-Bruno detainment. Some community members who know Oliver-Bruno say he’s a law-abiding citizen who should not be detained. Sunday, church members gathered to pray for him and his family. On Monday, dozens of protesters congregated at Wake County Detention Center in solidarity with him.

After he was detained, it sparked outrage from friends and family, and 27 of them found themselves behind bars.

Rev. Dr. William Barber says he's disappointed in both local and national leaders for not take a greater stand on the issue.

"The sheriff here could have easily let him go. He doesn't have to abide by what ICE did. See, he's as much a part of this, the outgoing sheriff. We come in love and justice and truth. Offer community to him because he needs to repent. Anybody that's participating this. Congress, sheriff, pastors who are being quiet and not saying anything. President, it's sin. This is sin. It is wrong," Barber said.

The human rights group "Alerta Migratoria" says Bruno is diabetic and they're worried ICE agents are not giving him the proper medications.

They also say his family received threats from his home country of Mexico and fear it's unsafe for him to return home.
