CHATHAM COUNTY, N.C. – A Confederate statue that has been a point of contention in Pittsboro for months has been taken down.

  • The Confederate statue that has stood outside of the Chatham County Courthouse for more than 100 years has been removed.
  • It was removed late Tuesday night.
  • A judge allowed for it to be removed "temporarily" last week by denying a preliminary injunction from the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Crews removed the statue from its pedestal in front of the Chatham County Courthouse in the late hours of Tuesday night.

The county and the United Daughters of the Confederacy, who gifted the statue to the county in 1907, have been in a legal battle over the statue for months over whether or not it could be taken down.

A judge denied a preliminary injunction from the UDC last month and allowed the statue to be removed until the two sides can meet in court again next month.

The statue has been taken to a safe place.
