CONCORD, N.C. -- A new nonprofit in Concord is trying to reach smaller volunteer fire departments to make sure all firefighters know about cancer risks and prevention tips.

Many new studies now name cancer as one of the leading causes of deaths among firefighters.

The Concord Fire Department has adopted new policies, like having a cleaning bucket on every engine to reduce the risk, and North Carolina Firefighter Alliance hopes to spread that same idea.

"The ones that fall through the cracks are your volunteer fire departments," said NC Firefighter Alliance's Travis McGaha. "They don’t always have the same funding. We’re trying to show that no matter the size of your department, no matter if you’re volunteer or paid, you can have the tools to do that gross field decontamination right there on the truck ready to go without any problems.
