NORTH CAROLINA — The North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles is making several changes to operations in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The NCDMV says, effective Wednesday, March 18, it will "consolidate in-person services to offices large enough to maintain social distancing as defined by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC)".

Officials say roughly 60 offices will be closing due to a lack of the recommended space advised by the CDC. More than 50 offices will remain open however, and employees from the closed offices will be re-assigned to help staff these locations.

The open offices will also be transitioned to handle appointment-only visits, the DMV says, and will limit the number of people allowed inside at the same time based on office size.

Road tests will be suspended, except for commercial driver's licenses and medical reassessments, and all customers for the driver license office will be required to completed a wellness questionnaire provided by state health officials to help prevent potential spread of the virus.

"Customers who have appointments at the open offices can keep those appointments, except for driving tests, and will be given priority if they reschedule their appointments after offices re-open," according to a release, and "Customers who have appointments at those offices are being contacted and will be given new appointments once those offices re-open."

Effective Saturday, March 21, the NCDMV says Saturday hours will be canceled at 13 locations across the state. Locations include:

  • Asheville
  • Charlotte North (University City)
  • Charlotte South (Arrowood Rd.)
  • Durham South (Hope Valley Commons SC)
  • Fayetteville West (Eutaw Village SC)
  • Greensboro West (Coliseum Blvd.)
  • Greenville
  • Huntersville
  • Jacksonville
  • Monroe
  • Raleigh North (Spring Forest Pavilion)
  • Wilmington South (South Square Plaza SC)
  • Winston-Salem South (Silas Creek Parkway)

You can check on the status of your local office and get additional information on these changes at the DMV website

Additionally, the N.C. Quick Pass walk-in locations will also temporarily close effective 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17 in the interest of public health and safety.

Officials say the customer service call center and online services will remain available, but customers may experience longer than normal wait time.
