FAYETTEVILLE, NC -- About 300 people honored Memorial Day with a Gold Star Family 5K Run in Fayetteville.

The event happened at Jordan Soccer Complex. Gold Star represents a service member who was killed in action. The event was hosted by the organization Wear Blue; Run to Remember. It was founded in 2010 after a woman lost her husband while he was returning from a mission in Afghanistan.

Spectrum News talked to one woman, Liz DeLise, who came out to show support for her friend who lost a loved one. 

"I remember the towers falling on 9/11 and that whole morning," Co-President for Wear Blue; Run to Remember, DeLise said. "That was my freshman year of college. The war was never really real until that moment...until I saw my friend get the notification that her fiance had passed."
