CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- UNC College Republicans Chairwoman Maggie Horzempa released a statement Tuesday condemning the destruction of Silent Sam.

  • Chairwoman Maggie Horzempa says the statue should be returned because it was removed unlawfully.
  • The group is demanding public safety, return to the rule of law and accountability. 

The student organization says it is demanding public safety, return to the rule of law and accountability.

The group's list of demands following the unlawful destruction of the Confederate monument include:

  • UNC collaborating with the Orange County District Attorney's Office to ensure a full investigation into the event. 
  • All students who participated in the destruction being held accountable through university disciplinary procedures.
  • UNC administrators, if responsible for the destruction, being held accountable.
  • The return and protection of the Silent Sam statue to its original place at least until it is decided to be removed through lawful channels.

FULL STATEMENT:

Additionally, Horzempa says, "there can and should be a worthwhile and healthy debate about the current day appropriateness of certain monuments, remembrances, and memorials on the UNC campus and across North Carolina."

 

 

 The group lists safety as an issue of high concern as well, stating "The protesters should consider themselves lucky that someone was not injured by these actions."
 
It is not yet known what will happen to the statue.
