The Greene County Sheriff's Office says they have arrested 32-year-old Michaelann Goodrich, following her attempt to gain access to one local school district, claiming to be a homeless student in the process.

Goodrich, who the sheriff's office says has a Cairo address but may be a transient, attempted to enroll under the alias "Riley Madison," and said she was 15 years old, according to the sheriff's office. The Cairo-Durham school district contacted local authorities to investigate the matter.

The investigation was completed before the end of the school's winter vacation, according to the sheriff's office. As a result, Goodrich has been charged with offering false instrument for filing in the first degree (class E felony), falsifying business records in the first degree (class E felony), and criminal trespass in the third degree (class B misdemeanor).

Goodrich is being held at the Greene County Jail on $5,000 / $10,000 cash bond.

The school district released a statement Thursday night in regards to this incident. According to them, per the federal McKinney-Vento Act and Goodrich claiming to be a homeless student, she was "entitled" to immediate enrollment.

"The McKinney-Vento Act is a federal regulation that requires schools to provide homeless students with the right to enroll in public school immediately, even if lacking the documents normally required for enrollment (e.g., immunization records, residency, academic records). Under this act, a student can enroll in school, and attend classes while the school gathers the needed documents. As part of this process, we discovered issues and immediately contacted the Greene County Sheriff’s Office to investigate," the statement said.

The sheriff's office and the school superintendent said because the investigation is still ongoing, they're not releasing the exact details of what led them to believe Goodrich wasn't a 15-year-old student.

The district also says Goodrich was on campus for one day with continuous supervision of district staff. Students who could have had contact with Goodrich have been interviewed, says the district.

Currently, the Greene County Sheriff's Office is unsure if Goodrich made other similar attempts or if this is a singular incident. They ask anyone with information to call the Sheriff's Investigations Unit at (518) 943-3300.
