HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. – Three people faced a judge Thursday in Hillsborough for misdemeanor charges in connection with recent demonstrations concerning Silent Sam on the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill.

  • The three are charged with misdemeanors.
  • All will appear in court again in September or October.
  • Protester from both sides of the issue appeared outside the courthouse.

Raul Jimenez was the first to face the judge. He's one of a few charged in toppling the Confederate statue last week. He will return to court in October.

Dannielle Shochet and Barry Brown also appeared in court. They were charged in the violent rally on Saturday at UNC.

Shochet opposes the statue while Brown supports it. The two will return to court in late September.

After court, the two sides faced each other in dueling rallies outside the courthouse.

Protesters chanted and spoke saying UNC hadn't done enough to remove the Confederate statue from campus.

On the other side, supporters said Silent Sam is a part of history and the statue isn't harming anyone.

On a separate note, a Chapel Hill officer is on leave with pay after he was seen with an anti-government militia tattoo during one of the rallies.

The police department is conducting an investigation.
