NORTH CAROLINA -- While things have returned to normal for some since the storm hit, others see reminders of Florence's fury every day.

  • UNC Wilmington, UNC Pembroke and Fayetteville State University suffered some damage
  • UNCW Students won't be able to return to class until Oct. 8
  • Officials have been working with the U.S. Department of Education to help students who have missed class due to the storm receive waivers

UNC System President Margaret Spellings says students and staff at our public universities are just some of those still struggling.

UNC Wilmington, UNC Pembroke and Fayetteville State University suffered some damage. UNCW Students won't be able to return to class until Oct. 8.

University leaders have been working to connect those affected with resources in their communities.

"A number of our staff and faculty have been displaced," said Spellings. "So I've heard stories of them moving in with other employees and faculty members to try to finish out the semester and restore their own lives."

Spellings says officials have been working with the U.S. Department of Education to help students who have missed class due to the storm receive waivers, so they can successfully complete requirements needed for graduation.
