IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — A decades-old church in Iredell County was damaged when strong storms rolled through the area late Thursday.

A tree was uprooted during the storm, and downed branches blocked roadways.

The pastor of 150-year-old Sandy Ridge United Methodist church, Marsha Joyner, says the roof was partially torn off during the storms. The original church bell wasn't damaged.

Joyner has been the pastor of the church for about 13 years.

"This church is filled with love and with the love of Christ. We will repair it and replace whatever needs to be replaced, because God is always in command," Joyner said.

Joyner welcomes any volunteers who would like to help cut trees that fell around the property, which is located off Friendship Road in Statesville. She can be reached at 828-461-1122.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning remained in effect for northern Mecklenburg, southern Iredell, southwestern Rowan, and northwestern Cabarrus counties through 5:45 a.m. Friday. Spectrum News 1 Meteorologist Matthew East said damaging winds were the biggest threat.

Storms slowly departed Friday morning.
