GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Guilford County schools are proactively trying to keep students from vaping and using electronic cigarettes.

  • They have new signs up and educational programs for students, parents, and faculty
  • School officials said if a student is caught vaping, the school has an alternative to suspension where a student has to take tobacco education training
  • National statistics show in 2018, one in five high schoolers had vaped and one in 20 middle schoolers had vaped

School officials said if a student is caught vaping, the school has an alternative to suspension where a student has to take tobacco education training.        

“They learn the dangers of vaping, they learn it's not just water vapor, it's not just harmless, and then some of the most recent information that we're learning about lung injury and illness related to vaping,” said Substance Abuse Coordinator, Kimberly Fields.

Fields said national statistics show in 2018, one in five high schoolers had vaped and one in 20 middle schoolers had vaped.
